Factors associated with multiple psychiatric readmissions for youth with mood disorders
Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Sep 19, 2019
Phillips MS, et al. - Based on prior research, researchers investigated patient-, hospital-, and community-level factors associated with single and multiple psychiatric readmission for youth. Assessment of data from Medicaid claims from four states supplemented with the American Hospital Association survey, the Area Resource File, and the National Survey of Mental Health Treatment Services yielded data of 941 youth (13.8%) who were readmitted once and 471 (6.9%) who were readmitted two or more times during 6 months after initial discharge. They observed significantly higher odds of single or multiple readmissions for youth classified as disabled or in foster care, those with multiple psychiatric comorbidities, medical comorbidity, and prior psychiatric hospitalization. Lower odds of readmission was observed in correlation with treatment in hospitals with a high percentage of Medicaid discharges and a high number of beds. A significant interaction between length of stay and outpatient mental health follow-up within 7 days of discharge was observed.
