Factors associated with microembolization after carotid intervention
Journal of Vascular Surgery Aug 26, 2018
Sabat J, et al. - In this prospective cohort study, patients undergoing carotid artery stenting (CAS) and carotid endarterectomy (CEA) were compared regarding the microembolization rates and patient and perioperative characteristics that may be associated with microembolization. Researchers prospectively recruited 202 patients under local Institutional Review Board approval from an academic medical center; 107 underwent CAS and 95 underwent CEA. Findings suggest a higher risk for postoperative embolization among patients undergoing CAS. The length of the lesion and calcification seemed to influence the risk for postoperative embolization. Selection of patients considering the preoperative risk factors may help to reduce embolization-related neurocognitive impairment.
