Factors associated with macrosomia, hypoglycemia and low Apgar score among Fijian women with gestational diabetes mellitus
BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth Mar 10, 2020
Fuka F, et al. - Researchers investigated the prevalence of, and sociodemographic factors linked with adverse neonatal outcomes among 255 pregnant Fijian women with gestational diabetes mellitus who gave birth to singleton infants at Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva city. The analysis revealed high rates of adverse neonatal outcomes (neonatal macrosomia, neonatal hypoglycemia, and low Apgar score) among the offsprings of these women. The higher likelihood for the same was observed among pregnant women who are overweight, had a previous baby weighing > 4 kg, had preeclampsia, delivered before 38 weeks of gestation, and those who booked later than 13 weeks in gestation. Interventions targeting these women may assist in improving pregnancy outcomes.
