Factors associated with lower-extremity amputation in patients with diabetic foot ulcers in a Chinese tertiary care hospital
International Wound Journal Aug 30, 2019
Guo Z, et al. – Researchers retrospectively analyzed data from 475 patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) in the central and southern regions of China (December 2014 and September 2018) in order to examine the potential risk factors prognosticating amputations in these patients. In this investigation, the major amputation rate was 0.8% and the minor amputation rate was 11.6%. In these Chinese diabetic foot ulcer patients, independent risk factors for amputation included an elevated glycated hemoglobin level, lower triglyceride level, and higher Wagner grades. Intensive monitoring and appropriate medical care after diagnosis of DFU may improve the prognosis and reduce the risk of diabetic patients being amputated. The researchers also underscored the importance of clinical management and nutritional support.
