Factors associated with long-term risk of recurrence after percutaneous radiofrequency thermocoagulation of the Gasserian ganglion for patients with trigeminal neuralgia: A multicenter retrospective analysis
Clinical Journal of Pain Nov 15, 2019
Zheng S, Li X, Li R, et al. - Researchers conducted a multicenter retrospective analysis of data from 1,481 patients with trigeminal neuralgia (TN) who underwent radiofrequency thermocoagulation (RFT) in order to assess the risk factors correlated with recurrence after RFT of the Gasserian ganglion during a long-term follow-up. The median of recurrence-free survival (RFS) of 136 months was reported. The rate of RFS at 1 year was 85.3%, at 3 years was 74.6%, at 5 years was 68.0%, and at 10 years was 54.9%. In the multivariate analysis, RFS was evident in independent correlation to atypical facial pain, Barrow Neurological Institute Class II/III facial hypesthesia before undergoing RFT, and history of previous microvascular decompression/RFT/neurosurgeries ≥ 2. Patients with prognostic index (PI) > 0.764 vs those with PI < 0.764 were identified to be at high-risk for TN recurrence with a median RFS of 36 months.
