Factors associated with locoregional and metastatic breast cancer at diagnosis in a Southern Portuguese registry in the period 2005–2012
European Journal of Cancer Prevention Oct 15, 2019
Gomes IA, et al. - Based on the demographic, clinical and contextual features, the characterization of patients with locoregional and metastatic incident breast cancer (BC) who were residents in the Southern Portuguese and Madeira regions was done over a period of 2005–2012. The links, as well as relative impacts of these factors with locoregional or metastatic disease at diagnosis, were also examined. A locoregional disease (78.4%) of unspecified location (44.5%), as well as the presence of ductal carcinoma (73.1%), was detected in the majority of the patients. Researchers noted that 50.5% of the examined cases were from the Lisbon region. Statistical correlations of demographic features (age at diagnosis ≥ 50 years), clinical (lobular and ‘other’ morphologies, unspecified location) and contextual (residence in Portalegre) features with the presence of metastatic disease at the time of BC diagnosis were revealed in the multivariate model. Findings revealed a decline in cases with metastatic BC disease at diagnosis; however, additional knowledge about their characteristics can confer benefits.
