Factors associated with highly effective contraceptive use among reproductive-age women in Peru: Evidence from a nationwide survey
European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology Feb 01, 2020
Soriano-Moreno DR, et al. - Researchers investigated the factors linked with highly effective contraceptive (HEC) use among reproductive-age women in Peru, using evidence from a nationwide survey. The Demographic and Family Health Survey, 2017, yielded data of a national representative sample of 30,169 Peruvian women aged 15–49 years for this analysis. HEC use was prevalent in 29.9%. A higher likelihood of using HEC methods was observed in correlation to the following factors: having one or more children, and having a health insurance children. Highly effective contraception use was less frequent among women from the highlands, aged ≥ 35 years, not currently married or cohabiting, and who considered it really hard to have to take transportation when they need medical help or advice. Findings indicate quality and access to reproductive health as challenging in Peru. They recommend improving the dissemination and integration of family planning programs. Similarly, they emphasize promoting educational campaigns and easy access to HEC methods.
