American Journal of Clinical Oncology Jan 30, 2019
Boakye EA, et al. - Data on 71,440 weighted hospital admissions from the 2014 National Inpatient Sample were studied to determine the hospitalization cost and its associated factors, along with the length of stay (LOSin patients treated for head and neck cancer in the US. Investigators estimated an average hospitalization cost of US $18,371 and the average LOS was 6.6 days for these patients. They found a relationship between LOS and admissions that included bacterial infection, major operating procedures, chemo procedures, radiation procedures, and admissions at medium or small bed size hospitals and rural hospitals. They also noted higher hospitalization costs for admitted black patients, elective admissions, admissions involving bacterial infection, major operating procedures, chemo procedure, radiation procedure, and advance comorbidities.
