Factors associated with geriatric frequent users of Emergency Departments
Annals of Emergency Medicine Jan 31, 2019
Castillo EM, et al. – Researchers determined patient characteristics and patterns of emergency department (ED) use among geriatric patients via performing this multicenter, retrospective, longitudinal, cohort study involving geriatric patients (aged > 65 years) in 2013 and 2014. They found that 5.7% of geriatric patients (n=71,449) were frequent users of the ED, and noted that specific diagnoses, injury-related visits, being admitted at least once during the year, and increasing comorbidity scores were associated with a higher likelihood of being a frequent user. Some differences by demographics were evident—the most notable being an ethnic relationship in a subset of the population in which black race/ethnicity was correlated with increased utilization and Asian race/ethnicity was correlated with decreased utilization patterns.
