Factors associated with discharge opioid prescription after hip fracture fixation
Musculoskeletal Care Sep 02, 2020
Fandino LB, Bhashyam A, Harris MB, et al. - The present study was conducted to ascertain independent factors correlated with elevated opioid prescriptions upon discharge after hip fracture fixation. Researchers conducted a retrospective cohort study including a total of 296 adult patients who had undergone hip fracture fixation between January 2016 and December 2017 at two Level I trauma centers in the study. An opioid prescription at discharge in morphine milligram equivalents was consider as the primary outcome measurement. Researchers applied bivariate analysis to screen for factors, and multivariable regression analysis was applied to distinguish independent factors associated with opioid prescriptions upon discharge from the hospital. An association was found between increased opioid prescribing after hip fracture fixation and patient‐and system‐related factors. It was considered that prescriber education programs, prescription guidelines, and safe handoff practices that focus on these factors may guide to reduce prescription variability and opioid overprescription across institutions.
