Factors associated with discharge opioid prescription after hip fracture fixation
Musculoskeletal Care Mar 27, 2020
Fandino LB, et al. - This retrospective cohort study sought to identify independent factors correlated with increased opioid prescription upon discharge after hip fracture fixation. Researchers included a total of 296 adult individuals who had undergone hip fracture fixation between January 2016 and December 2017 at two Level I trauma centers. Opioid prescription at discharge in morphine milligram equivalents was the primary outcomes measurement. They applied bivariate analysis to screen factors, and multivariable regression analysis was applied to distinguish independent factors correlated with opioid prescription upon discharge from the hospital. The results demonstrated that, after hip fracture fixation, increased opioid prescribing is correlated with patient‐ and system‐related factors. The data revealed that prescriber education programs, prescription guidelines, and safe handoff practices that targets on these factors may support to reduce prescription variability and opioid overprescription across institutions.
