Factors associated with blood pressure disorders in Afro-descendant children and adolescents
BMC Pediatrics Jul 25, 2019
Quaresma FRP, et al. - In this cross-sectional study, researchers explored the connection between individual characteristics (gender, age, anthropometry, body composition, blood pressure, biochemical analysis) and lifestyle (dietary intake of sodium, calcium and physical activity level) in blood pressure (BP) disorders in adolescents in communities of “Quilombola”. Of the 121 eligible adolescents, 67 children (aged 10 to 17 years) partook in the inclusion criterion of the five "Quilombola" communities. Data reported that the rate of adolescents with BP disorders was 19.4%. In "Quilombola" communities, the majority of children and adolescents had normal BP. However, in the population studied with high BP, higher dyslipidemia levels and low calcium intake are factors associated with prehypertension. The results show the importance of a favorable combination of physical activity and nutritional environments in places where children and adolescents live to maintain a healthy BP disorder course and behaviour.
