Factors associated with acute medication overuse in people with migraine: Results from the 2017 migraine in America Symptoms and Treatment (MAST) Study
The Journal of Headache and Pain May 31, 2018
Schwedt TJ, et al. - Researchers undertook the MAST Study, a longitudinal, cross-sectional survey study of US adults with migraine, to determine the rates of acute medication overuse (AMO) and assess associations of AMO with individual and headache characteristics. They noted AMO in 15% of respondents with migraine. Higher symptom severity scores, pain intensity, and rates of cutaneous allodynia were noted in association with AMO. Compared to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug users, triptan, opioid, and barbiturate users displayed AMO more frequently. Men but not women showed cutaneous allodynia in association with AMO.
