Factors affecting vitamin D status in outpatients with abdominal aortic aneurysm and peripheral artery disease: A single centre study
Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Jul 28, 2021
Adamska-Tomaszewska D, Kocełak P, Owczarek AJ, et al. - Among outpatients suffering from abdominal aneurysms (AAA) and peripheral artery disease (PAD) not treated with vitamin D (VD), this cross-sectional analysis was undertaken to evaluate not only vitamin D status but also factors impacting serum 25-OH-D concentrations, given VD deficiency is considered a crucial risk factor for the occurrence of atherosclerosis and aortic aneurysms. Participants included 59 outpatients with AAA and 150 with PAD. On the basis of commonly used cut-offs for serum 25-OH-D, VD status was divided as: <20 ng/mL – deficiency, <30 ng/mL –insufficiency. No greater frequency of VD deficiency was observed in outpatients with AAA when compared with that in those with PAD. In both outpatients with AAA and PAD, past stroke episodes were shown to be related to an increased development of VD deficiency other than sun exposure and diet.
