Factors affecting swallowing outcomes after total laryngectomy: Participant self-report using the swallowing outcomes after laryngectomy questionnaire

Lee MT, et al. - As little is known about what factors influence patient-reported swallowing outcome after total laryngectomy, researchers ascertained if patient demographics, surgical variables, use of adjuvant treatment, and time since surgery were correlated with patient-reported swallowing outcome. Two hundred and twenty-one candidates had complete data on treatment-related variables. After a laryngectomy, swallowing outcomes after laryngectomy is a sensitive measure of self-reported swallowing outcome. The type of surgical closure and the type of additional treatment affected patient-reported swallowing outcomes. Changes in perceived swallowing function should be assessed regularly to guide clinical decision-making and intervention.
