Factors affecting posterior glottic stenosis surgery outcomes: Systematic review and meta-analysis
Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology Mar 04, 2021
Kremer C, Jiang R, Singh A, et al. - In this systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers sought to examine surgical adjuncts (stents) and previous surgeries on outcomes from posterior glottic stenosis (PGS). Publications on adult patients undergoing PGS surgery were found in PubMED/Medline, CINAHL, EMBASE, and Web of Science. A total of 516 abstracts were reviewed and 26 articles were considered for the systematic review. On multivariate meta-analysis analysis accounting for study-specific variation and use of open procedures, prior surgeries were correlated with additional surgeries and the use of a stent was related to a lower likelihood of decannulation. The use of a stent was linked to poor outcomes, and minimizing repeat surgery is a predictor of avoiding additional future surgeries. Such two findings may aid providers in counselling patients about the need for additional surgical interventions. In addition, this is the first research to compare the effectiveness of surgical approaches for the resolution of PGS, stressing the importance of avoiding repeat procedures and stents in PGS management.
