Factors affecting complications and comorbidities in children with cholesteatoma
International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology May 10, 2020
Lee JA, Fuller SR, Nguyen SA, et al. - An analysis of the Kids’ Inpatient Database was conducted to determine the impact of age, race, payer status, and socioeconomic status on complications and comorbidities in children with cholesteatoma. Over the study period, 1,552 cases [mean age was 9.9 (± 5.4) years] of pediatric cholesteatoma represented 5.6 cases per 100,000 total discharges. According to findings, differences in the age, race, payer status and socioeconomic status of children hospitalized with cholesteatoma occur in the presentation and surgical management. Older children are at higher risk of intracranial complications. Black and Hispanic patients may be at elevated risk of facial nerve palsy. Children from lower income families experience more often acute mastoiditis and subperiosteal abscess compared with those from higher income families. When caring for children with cholesteatoma, clinicians should be aware of these risk factors.
