Facial emotion recognition, socio-occupational functioning and expressed emotions in schizophrenia vs bipolar disorder
Psychiatry Research Apr 04, 2018
Thonse U, et al. - This study is one of the first studies that examined the association between facial emotion recognition and expressed emotions between two groups of severe mental illness (schizophrenia vs bipolar disorder) in the remission phase. Patients with schizophrenia and those with bipolar disorder showed no difference in emotion recognition abilities. Compared to patients with bipolar disorder in remission phase of the illness, patients with schizophrenia experienced more critical comments from their caregivers. In the current study, patients with schizophrenia showed poorer socio occupational functioning in comparison to patients with bipolar disorder. Patients with bipolar disorder showed significant positive correlation between TRACS score and socio occupational functioning impairment. This present study had shown that in patients with bipolar disorder, impairment in emotion recognition was associated with hostility and dissatisfaction from their primary caregiver.
