Extubation in the operating room after transapical transcatheter aortic valve implantation safely improves time-related outcomes and lowers costs: A propensity score-matched analysis
Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia Sep 02, 2020
Yu H, Zhao DL, Ye YC, et al. - This propensity score-matched analysis was performed to determine the impact of operating room (OR) extubation vs extubation in the ICU on the outcomes as well as expense in patients receiving transapical-transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). This study was conducted in a single major urban teaching and university hospital and included 266 patients receiving transapical TAVI under general anesthesia between June 2015 and March 2020. To detect 99 patients receiving extubation in the OR vs 72 receiving extubation in the ICU for outcome analysis, propensity matching on pre- and intraoperative variables was employed. As per the evidence generated in this study, performing extubation in the OR could afford a safe option that did not raise morbidity, mortality, or reintubation rate and could offer cost-effective outcome advantages in patients receiving transapical-TAVI.
