Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcomas: Combined modality therapy with both radiation and surgery improves local control

American Journal of Clinical Oncology Oct 07, 2019

Bishop AJ, Bird JE, Conley AP, et al. - The records of 41 consecutive individuals with localized extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcomas (EMCs) treated from 1990 to 2016 was reviewed to assess the experience of the experts treating patients with localized EMCs to assess outcomes and relapse rates in order to better notify treatment decisions for these rare soft tissue sarcomas. At a median time of 75 months, there were five patients with local relapse. On univariate analysis, the use of surgery alone was the only important factor correlated with poorer local control, which continued to be the only factor also meaningful in the multivariable analysis. In total, at a median time of 28 months, 13 patients acquired distant metastatic. On multivariate analysis, the only factor related to poorer distant metastatic-free survival was a local recurrence. Surgery alone was correlated with a greater risk of local recurrence for individuals with EMC. Hence, optimal local therapeutic approaches upfront with both surgery and radiation therapy was suggested in order to decrease the risk of local and sequentially distant recurrence.
