Extra-axillary nodal metastases in breast cancer: Comparison of ultrasound, MRI, PET/CT, and CT
Clinical Imaging Apr 07, 2021
Chung HL, Shin K, Sun J, et al. - Ultrasound (US), MRI, PET/CT, and CT were evaluated for their performance in predicting extra-axillary nodal metastases. In this IRB approved, retrospective study, researchers included a total of 124 suspicious supraclavicular and 88 internal mammary (IM) nodal cases with US and at least one additional cross-sectional examination (MRI, PET/CT or CT) from a total of 1,472 invasive cancers with staging nodal US between January 2016–January 2019. Findings revealed a high accuracy of US/FNA in the supraclavicular (98.2%) and IM region (93.2%). Fine needle aspiration biopsy led to direct confirmation of malignancy in 93.5% of supraclavicular and 43.2% of internal mammary suspicious nodes. In cases with no availability of biopsy results in the IM region, MRI and PET/CT exhibited 100.0% and 96.8% accuracy and can be employed to guide treatment decisions.
