External fixation vs intramedullary nailing for knee arthrodesis after failed infected total knee arthroplasty: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Journal of Arthroplasty | Nov 11, 2017
White C, et al. - This study was designed to compare 2 procedures for knee arthrodesis after failed infected total knee arthroplasty (TKA): external fixation vs intramedullary nailing, focusing primarily on radiographic union, recurrent deep infection, revision arthrodesis, and amputation. Findings demonstrated that intramedullary nailing displayed greater efficacy than external fixation with respect to several clinically important outcomes, and hence, was recommended as a salvage procedure for infected TKA in the absence of specific indications for external fixation.
