Extent of positive surgical margins following radical prostatectomy: Impact on biochemical recurrence with long-term follow-up
BMC Urology May 21, 2019
Koskas Y, et al. -In this retrospective study involving 1275 patients, researchers evaluated the prognostic value of the extent of positive surgical margins (PSM) following radical prostatectomy (RP) on biochemical recurrence (BR) with long-term follow-up. Overall, the study included 189 patients with PSM that met the inclusion criteria. Findings revealed that the median follow-up was 101 months (18–283) and the median age was 63 years. Data reported that BR occurred in only 12.1% of cases involving focal PSM (fPSM) and in 54.1% of cases involving extensive PSM (ePSM). According to results, ePSM was strongly linked to BR vs fPSM with a median 8-year follow-up. Monitoring patients with fPSM, therefore, seems legitimate. Adjuvant treatment appears to be effective in ePSM cases.
