Extensive undertreatment of osteoporosis in older Swedish women
Osteoporosis International Jun 08, 2019
Lorentzon M, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the proportion of women treated with osteoporosis medication in relation to the proportion of women eligible for treatment according to national guidelines in this population-based study of 3028 older women (77.8 ± 1.6 years [mean ± SD]). Complete data were available for 2983 women; of these 1107 (37%) women were identified as eligible for treatment using Swedish Osteoporosis Society (SvOS) criteria. Treatment receipt was reported in 21.8% of these women indicating prescription of osteoporosis medication only for a minority of those eligible for treatment. Glucocorticoid treatment and prior fracture were identified as the strong predictors for receiving osteoporosis medication in women eligible for treatment according to SvOS guidelines.
