Extended venous thromboembolism prophylaxis after radical cystectomy: A call for adherence to current guidelines
The Journal of Urology Nov 09, 2017
Klaassen Z, et al. - An appraisal was carried out of the timing and incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE). This research also included a re-analysis of the current guideline recommendations and provided evidence for regarding the extended VTE prophylaxis among all patients undergoing radical cystectomy (RC). Such patients appeared to be at high risk for VTE after hospital discharge. Strong evidence was yielded which pointed out that an extended prophylaxis substantially decreased the risk of VTEs in surgical oncology patients. The use of extended prophylaxis post-RC was poorly adopted. This data stressed on the necessity for better adherence to current urology procedure specific guidelines, as extended prophylaxis for RC remained as the standard of care. Specific and typically rare circumstances possibly warranted case-by-case assessment.
