Extended prophylaxis for venous thromboembolism after hospitalization for medical illness: A trial sequential and cumulative meta-analysis
PLoS Medicine May 03, 2019
Bajaj NS, et al. – Because the efficacy, safety, and clinical significance of extended-duration thromboprophylaxis (EDT) for venous thromboembolism (VTE) prevention in remain unclear, researchers compared the effectiveness and safety of EDT in patients hospitalized for medical illness. The duration of EDT ranged from 24–47 days across 40,247 patients from 5 randomized clinical trials. According to findings, the use of a post-hospital discharge EDT strategy for a period of 4-6 weeks decreased symptomatic or fatal VTE events. At the expense of increased risk of major or fatal bleeding events, modest benefits were noted.
