Expression of NKG2D ligands is downregulated by beta-catenin signaling and associates with HCC aggressiveness

Journal of Hepatology Jan 23, 2021

Cadoux M, Caruso S, Pham S, et al. - This study was undertaken to investigate the expression of natural killer group 2, member D (NKG2D) ligands in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), in both humans and mice, taking the genomic features of HCC tumors into account. Researchers examined the expression of NKG2D ligands (MICA, MICB, ULBP1, and ULBP2) in large human HCC datasets by Fluidigm TaqMan and RNAseq methods, as well as in two mouse models (mRNA and protein levels) reproducing the features of both major groups of human tumors. The results of this study illustrate that the expression of NKG2D ligands is correlated with aggressive liver tumorigenesis and that the less aggressive phenotype of CTNNB1-mutated HCC tumors may be due to the downregulation of these ligands by β-catenin signaling.
