Expression of epicardial adipose tissue thermogenic genes in patients with reduced and preserved ejection fraction heart failure
International Journal of Medical Sciences Sep 22, 2017
Perez-Belmonte LM, et al. - The intent here was to evaluate the expression of thermogenic genes (Uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PGC1α), and PR-domain-missing 16 (PRDM16) in epicardial adipose tissue in patients with heart failure, thereby establishing the variation based on the left ventricular ejection fraction (reduced or preserved). The adequate expression of thermogenic genes presented as probable protective factors against heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. This finding indicated that a loss of functional epicardial adipose tissue brown-like features would participate in a deleterious manner on heart metabolism. Thermogenic genes could serve as a prospective, novel therapeutic target in heart failure.
