Lin WH, et al. - Given the possibility of methodological issue, such as selection bias, with previous works demonstrating the association of sexually explicit media exposure during early adolescence with risky sexual behavior, researchers sought to ascertain if and how multi-modality sexually explicit media exposure affects sexual behavior. In addition, they determined how this relationship can be applied to non-western societies. From a prospective longitudinal study (Taiwan Youth Project), they recruited participants who were all in 7th grade (mean age = 13.3) when the study was initiated in 2000. in wave 2 (8th grade), measurement of sexually explicit media exposure, including ever-exposure and number of modalities exposed to, was done. In waves 8 (mean age = 20.3) and 10 (mean age = 24.3), measurement of risky sexual behavior was done. a substantive relationship Exposure to sexually explicit media in early adolescence had with risky sexual behavior in the emerging adulthood. They suggest implementing better preventive programs in early adolescence based on information of this causal like effect. Early education on media literacy is suggested to be a prominent way, and physicians themselves may require to be acquainted with such content to initiate it.
