Exploring variations in ovarian cancer survival by age and stage (ICBP SurvMark-2): A population-based study

Gynecologic Oncology Feb 04, 2020

Cabasag CJ, Butler J, Arnold M, et al. - Using 21 population-based cancer registries in Australia, Canada, Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, and United Kingdom, researchers assessed the disparities in ovarian cancer survival by age and stage at diagnosis within and across these seven high-income countries. Participants were 58,161 women who received a diagnosis of ovarian cancer during 2010–2014 and were followed until 31 December 2015. Between countries, they reported a minor difference in the stage distribution; most women being diagnosed with ‘distant’ stage (ranging between 64% in Canada and 71% in Norway). The 3-year all-ages net survival ranging from 45 to 57% was reported, and the highest survival was reported in Australia (56%) and Norway (57%). Those aged 65–74 and 75–99 years exhibited the highest proportion with ‘distant’ stage, and the proportion varied markedly between countries. The lowest 3-year age-specific survival (20–34%) was reported in the oldest age group, and women aged 65–74 showed the widest difference across countries. Findings revealed the existence of international disparities in ovarian cancer survival by stage, with the largest variations noted in the oldest age group with advanced disease.
