Exploring the relationship between chronic pain and cortisol levels in subjects with osteoarthritis: Results from a systematic review of the literature
Osteoarthritis and Cartilage Mar 23, 2020
Villafañe JH, Pedersini P, Bertozzi L, et al. - Via systematically searching databases MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE for human studies written in English up to December 2018, researchers intended to determine if there is a connection between cortisol and pain in the osteoarthritis (OA) population. The analysis covered seven reports focusing on 415 patients. This research reveals that the link between cortisol and pain has a difference depending on how and when cortisol is measured. Results from three low-quality studies indicate elevated rates of cortisol in pain patients, however, there is a strong risk of prejudice in the findings. A quantitative analysis comparing the connection between cortisol and pain in the OA population could not be performed.
