Exploring lay public and dental professional knowledge around HPV transmission via oral sex and oral cancer development
BMC Public Health Nov 21, 2019
Brondani MA, et al. - Researchers analyzed the practicing dental professionals as well as 212 lay public participants (in Vancouver) with respect to their knowledge of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) transmission via oral sex and subsequent oropharyngeal cancer development. Overall 46 health care professionals were included in the forum. As far as HPV infection-related potential risks for head and neck cancer development were concerned, awareness was seen in many of these professionals, while also questioning “how to effectively talk about HPV with patients.” As for HPV and HIV transmission, oral sex was considered by 34.5% and 84% of participants, respectively, as as an activity with no or low risk. No discussions about oral sexual activities were held with their physicians or dentists/dental hygienists in most cases (82%). Findings revealed mostly unawareness in the general public regarding the potential links between HPV infection and oropharyngeal cancer. Discussing oral sexual practice with their patients to increase awareness was advised to physicians and dental providers.
