Exploring factors that impact uptake of risk-reducing bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (RRBSO) in high-risk women
Menopause Jan 10, 2020
Hickey M, Rio I, Trainer A, et al. - In view of the suboptimal uptake of risk-reducing bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (RRBSO), the only procedure known to reduce ovarian cancer deaths in high-risk women, researchers here investigated the barriers to RRBSO and patient needs for information and care. Using a purpose-designed questionnaire, they assessed 60 high-risk women (aged 30 to 50) in this cross-sectional study including the Perception of Cancer Risk Scale. Premenopausal RRBSO was either under consideration or was recently performed among respondents. No personal history of cancer was noted in most (49/60) of the respondents; 11/60 had previous breast cancer. For high-risk women, barriers to RRBSO were concerns about surgical menopause and loss of fertility despite understanding the benefits of reduced cancer risk. Observations revealed an unmet requirement for more knowledge regarding efficiently managing the noncancer outcomes of RRBSO in premenopausal women.
