Experimental referred pain extends towards previously injured location – An explorative study
The Journal of Pain May 27, 2018
Palsson TS, et al. - In order to determine if a recovered pain condition leaves traces of higher sensitivity of pain mechanisms, researchers assessed pain characteristics in individuals who recently recovered from ankle pain and sex-matched controls in response to tonic-pressure pain and saline-induced pain applied at the shin muscle. As per observation, pain is more likely to be referred to the previous area of nociceptive activity. Compared with controls, the pain area is enlarged in the previously painful area. After recovery from pain, improved ability to dampen pain via endogenous inhibition was noted. Findings thereby suggest the mechanisms involved in recovery from musculoskeletal pain.
