Experiences, needs, and preferences for follow-up after stroke perceived by people with stroke and healthcare professionals: A focus group study
PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases Oct 09, 2019
Kjörk EK, et al. - Researchers sought to assess the perceptions of people with stroke and healthcare professionals regarding their follow-up experiences, needs, and preferences. In this qualitative exploratory study, they conducted focus groups with two patient groups (n = 10, range 45–78 years) and two multidisciplinary healthcare professional groups (n = 8, range 35–55 years). They identified three organizational themes and six subthemes. On returning home, people with stroke discovered feelings and changes. Problems and feelings of abandonment in daily life became evident. Experiences of unequal access to healthcare services were reported by participants. Difficulties in communicating one’s needs and lack of coherent follow-up were identified as barriers to accessing appropriate treatment and support. Certain clinics had well functioning of follow-up activities but these did not provide continuity over the long term. As per participants' suggestions, a comprehensive, planned, and tailored follow-up is emphasized to meet patient needs.
