Exogenous hormone use and cutaneous melanoma risk in women: The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition
International Journal of Cancer Sep 19, 2019
Cervenka I, Al Rahmoun M, Mahamat-Saleh Y, et al. - Among female participants in a prospective cohort study—the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition—researchers assessed the risk of developing melanoma in correlation with use of oral contraceptives (OCs) and menopausal hormone therapy (MHT). This investigation was carried out in 10 European countries. Among 334,483 women, 1,696 cases of melanoma were identified during 1992-2015. Of these, 770 cases were found among 134,758 postmenopausal women. A positive, borderline-significant link was found between OC use and melanoma risk, with no detected heterogeneity across countries. A linear rise in this risk was seen in association with the duration of use. A non-significant rise in melanoma risk overall was observed in postmenopausal women in correlation with ever use of MHT; this increase in risk was heterogeneous across countries. Overall, a strong and direct link between exogenous hormone use and melanoma risk was not supported in this study.
