Exercise during the first trimester of pregnancy and the risks of abnormal screening and gestational diabetes mellitus
Diabetes Care Dec 26, 2020
Ehrlich SF, Ferrara A, Hedderson MA, et al. - Researchers sought to determine how exercise during the first trimester affects the risks of abnormal screening and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). They derived data from PETALS, a prospectively followed pregnancy cohort (n = 2,246, 79% minorities) receiving care at Kaiser Permanente Northern California, and used a Pregnancy Physical Activity Questionnaire to assess exercise. Abnormal screening and GDM were reported in 24.3% and 6.5%, respectively. Overall findings suggest that the risks of abnormal screening and GDM reduce in correlation with exercise, however its amount required to attain these risk reductions is likely higher than current recommendations. In future interventions, they suggest considering promotion of ≥ 38 min per day of moderate-intensity exercise to prevent GDM.
