Excessive weight gain before and during gestational diabetes mellitus management: What is the impact?
Diabetes Care Nov 10, 2019
Barnes RA, Wong T, Ross GP, et al. - Via prospectively analyzing data from pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus [GDM; diagnosed on the basis of Australasian Diabetes in Pregnancy Society 1998 guidelines (1992–2015)] at a single institution, researchers tested the assumption that excessive weight gain at first presentation with GDM (excessive gestational weight gain [EGWG]) and continued EGWG (cEGWG) after commencing GDM management would raise the risk of adverse outcomes, in spite of treatment to optimize glycemia. The link between EGWG and antenatal 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (oGTT) values, and adverse outcomes, was assessed. Of the 3,281 women who were pregnant, 776 had EGWG. Findings suggested that the absence of EGWG and the restriction of cEGWG in GDM have a mitigating impact on oGTT-based fasting plasma glucose, the risk of having a large-for-gestational-age infant and insulin requirements.
