Excessive gestational weight gain in the first and second trimester is a risk factor for gestational diabetes mellitus among women pregnant with singletons: A repeated measures analysis
Journal of Diabetes Investigation Aug 02, 2020
Qi Y, Sun X, Tan J, et al. - Researchers examined whether gestational weight gain (GWG) in the first and second trimester is associated with risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in women pregnant with singletons. They identified 10,422 pregnant women with singleton pregnancies who delivered between January 1, 2013 and October 31, 2014. Of these, 8,356 women were eligible with 1,622 (19.4%) diagnosed with GDM. Per univariable and multivariable analyses, GWG exceeding the 90th and 95th quantiles of included women, respectively, were at increased risk for GDM. This study thereby suggests excessive GWG in the first and second trimester as a risk factor for developing GDM, emphasizing the importance of appropriate weight gain during pregnancy.
