Excess risk of hospitalisation for heart failure among people with type 2 diabetes
Diabetologia - Clinical and Experimental Diabetes and Metabolism Sep 30, 2018
Rosengren A, et al. – Given that type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a risk factor for heart failure (HF) but there is a paucity of age-specific data, researchers evaluated the excess risk of HF based on age, glycemic control, and kidney function compared to age- and sex-matched control individuals from the general population. Study participants included 266,305 individuals with T2DM registered in the Swedish National Diabetes Registry and 1,323,504 age-, sex-, and county-matched control individuals without diabetes; they were followed up over a median of 5.6 years until December 31, 2013. Researchers found that men and women aged < 55 years with T2DM were at significantly greater excess risk of hospitalization for HF and also noted that, although the excess risk declined with age, it persisted despite good glycemic control. Findings revealed that individuals with T2DM who were ≥ 75 years with well-controlled glucose levels or free from albuminuria had a similar risk of HF on par with control individuals without diabetes.
