Excess mortality in patients with type 1 diabetes without albuminuria-separating the contribution of early and late risks

Groop PH, et al. - In this present study, experts examine whether the risk of mortality in patients with type 1 diabetes without any signs of albuminuria is different than in the general population and matched control subjects without diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, excess mortality is found to be the result of its complications. Acute complications drive an increased standardized mortality ratio in the first years. Mortality because of ischemic heart disease is still 4 times higher in individuals who remain free of albuminuria, and acute complications also occur.
