Evolution of excisional surgery practices for melanoma in the United States
JAMA Dermatology Nov 24, 2019
Lee MP, Sobanko JF, Shin TM, et al. - In this national cross-sectional analysis involving 79,108 patients (median age, 63 years [interquartile range {IQR}, 51-73]), researchers analyzed trends in the use of comprehensive margin assessment surgery for melanoma by tracking claims data for Mohs surgery. For this investigation, they identified patients with melanomas treated with surgical excision. Significant geographic variation in surgical practices have been recorded, but increasing use of Mohs surgery with and without immunohistochemistry. Findings suggest that surgical practices for melanoma are evolving despite stable guidelines for melanoma surgery. In the United States, there are wide variations in surgical practice trends for melanoma. The authors recommend that scrutiny and further study are needed for the effect of variations in surgical techniques on the outcome.
