Evidence in support for the progressive nature of ovarian endometriomas
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism May 23, 2020
Ding D, Wang X, Chen Y, et al. - Researchers assessed 30 adolescent patients, aged 15 to 19 years, and 32 adult patients, aged 35 to 39 years, all laparoscopically and histologically diagnosed with ovarian endometrioma (OE) in order to examine whether OE is progressive or not. The adolescent and adult patients had markedly different OE lesions, with the latter exhibiting more extensive and thorough progression and more extensive fibrosis, indicating progression of lesions in adults to a more advanced stage. A positive association was observed of adult lesions and higher staining level of α-smooth muscle actin and adrenergic receptor β2 with the extent of lesional fibrosis, while there was a negative association of the lesion size and the E-cadherin staining. This study thereby yield a more definitive piece of evidence indicating progressive nature of OE. Further, the lesional age along with the severity of endometriosis-associated dysmenorrhea, if any, influenced the pace of progression.
