Evidence for household transmission of rotavirus in the United States, 2011–2016
Journal of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society Feb 13, 2019
Wikswo ME, et al. - Researchers assessed the presence of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in household contacts (HHCs) of pediatric patients with laboratory-confirmed rotavirus via enrolling children aged 14 days to 11 years with AGE at 1 of 7 hospitals or Emergency Departments as part of the New Vaccine Surveillance Network between December 2011 and June 2016. Overall, they enrolled 829 rotavirus-positive subjects and 8858 rotavirus-negative subjects. Households of rotavirus-positive subjects were at higher risk of reporting AGE illness in ≥1 HHC than were rotavirus-negative households. Compared to other age groups, HHCs who were <5 years old had a higher tendency to report AGE illness. Findings suggest that in children, rotavirus-associated AGE can lead to significant disease burden in HHCs, especially in children aged <5 years. Additional illnesses in HHCs could be prevented via preventing pediatric rotavirus illness, notably through vaccination.
