Evidence for exacerbation-prone asthma and predictive biomarkers of exacerbation frequency
American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine Oct 07, 2020
Peters MC, Mauger D, Ross KR, et al. - This study was conducted to prospectively evaluate exacerbation-prone asthma (EPA) phenotype and utility of baseline blood measures of eosinophils and IL-6 as predictive biomarkers. Researchers examined three-year asthma exacerbation data in 406 adults in the Severe Asthma Research Program-3. They applied transition models to evaluate uninformed and informed probabilities of exacerbation in year 3. They applied binomial regression models to evaluate eosinophils and IL-6 as predictive biomarkers. The results demonstrate that longitudinal analysis validates an EPA phenotype defined by features of metabolic dysfunction. The data exhibited that blood measures of IL-6, but not eosinophils, were significantly correlated with EPA, and IL-6 and eosinophils prognosticated exacerbations in the sample as a whole.
