Evaluation of treatment with 2 weeks of doxycycline on macrolide-resistant strains of Mycoplasma genitalium: A retrospective observational study
BMC Infectious Diseases Dec 11, 2021
Gossé M, Nordbø SA, Pukstad B, et al. - Treatment of Mycoplasma genitalium infections has become challenging because of increasing macrolide resistance. The effects of treatment with doxycycline 100 mg twice daily for 2 weeks have been evaluated as an alternative to moxifloxacin (an antibiotic drug used as the second-line treatment best avoided due to the potential of severe side effects and interactions).
Performing a retrospective observational study of medical records of patients testing positive for macrolide resistant Mycoplasma genitalium, researchers identified 263 infections from 259 patients (161 females/98 males) for inclusion in the analysis.
In this study, there was a higher cure rate of doxycycline than previously reported, providing additional support to doxycycline’s role in treatment prior to initiating treatment with less favorable drugs such as moxifloxacin.
