Evaluation of topical corticosteroid use in pregnancy and risk of newborns being small for gestational age and having low birth weight
JAMA Jul 24, 2021
Andersson NW, et al. - Experts aspired to explore whether topical corticosteroid use in pregnancy is correlated with increased risks of small for gestational age (SGA) and low birth weight. From September 8, 2020, to February 23, 2021, data analysis were conducted. Among the 60,497 matched pregnancies exposed to topical corticosteroids, 5,678 of the delivered infants were born SGA vs 22,634 infants among the matched unexposed pregnancies. This large cohort study discovered no link between topical corticosteroid use in pregnancy and an increased risk of SGA or low birth weight. Such findings suggest that even when large amounts of potent to very potent topical corticosteroids are used in pregnancy, a moderate to a large increase in risk is unlikely.
