Evaluation of the sensitivity of inhomogeneous magnetization transfer (ihMT) MRI for multiple sclerosis
American Journal of Neuroradiology Apr 19, 2018
Van Obberghen E, et al. - The proposition analyzed was that inhomogeneous magnetization transfer was sensitive to pathology in a population of patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS) in a way that both varied from and complemented conventional magnetization transfer. Enrollees underwent anatomic imaging, standard magnetization transfer, and inhomogeneous magnetization transfer imaging. Findings underscored the sensitivity of the inhomogeneous magnetization transfer technique for MS through the reduction in the inhomogeneous magnetization transfer ratio in MS lesions and in normal-appearing WM of patients compared with controls. Stronger correlations were yielded with the Expanded Disability Status Scale score via the inhomogeneous magnetization transfer ratio compared with the standard magnetization transfer ratio, which was possibly elucidated via the higher specificity of inhomogeneous magnetization transfer for myelin.
