Evaluation of the routine use of pelvic MRI in women presenting with symptomatic uterine fibroids: When is pelvic MRI useful?
Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Jan 10, 2019
Vu KN, et al. - In this retrospective observational study, researchers determined the added value of pelvic MRI for women diagnosed with symptomatic fibroids by ultrasound (US) and identified clinical factors associated with additional MRI findings. In all, 367 consecutive women with US-diagnosed fibroids referred to the multidisciplinary fibroid center between 2013 and 2017. Adenomyosis (22%), endometriosis (17%), and partially endocavitary fibroids (15%) were the most common significant findings. According to results, pelvic MRI showed additional findings in more than 40% of women presenting with symptoms initially ascribed to fibroids by US. For parous women with pelvic pain, poor quality of life scores, and/or multiple fibroids, further evaluation using MRI is particularly beneficial.
