Evaluation of SPECT/CT in the assessment of inflammatory jaw pathologies
European Journal of Radiology Mar 01, 2020
Modabber A, Schick D, Mohlhenrich SC, et al. - In order to find out the performance of three-phase bone scintigraphy including SPECT/CT in the evaluation of correct diagnosis and size of the affected bone tissue, researchers performed a retrospective study including a total of 31 individuals with suspected jaw-related osteoradionecrosis, osteomyelitis or medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw, who underwent 3-phase bone scintigraphy including SPECT/CT. Two nuclear medicine physicians reviewed the outcomes. Compared with other conventional imaging modalities, SPECT/CT can safely identify different kinds of inflammatory jaw pathologies. It was demonstrated that the lack of specificity of conventional scintigraphy ranging from 17% to 71% in earlier studies could be improved by adding CT-analysis. The study indicated that SPECT/CT supports the surgeon in determining the expansion of the process (with focus on the length) preoperatively and thereby optimizing surgery planning.
